C4 Nickel Alloy Reducing Flange Versus C22 And C276 Selection
The three grades read alike on a datasheet and behave differently on a job; here is the short version.
Hastelloy C-4 (N06455)
- Chemistry: Titanium stabilised, no tungsten addition
- Strong Point: Structure holds after thermal exposure
- Pick It When: Heavy welding and no post-weld furnace
- Iron Content: Lowest of the three, 3 percent ceiling
Hastelloy C-276 (N10276)
- Chemistry: Tungsten bearing, higher iron allowance
- Strong Point: Broadest track record in mixed media
- Pick It When: The spec names it and stock is the issue
- Iron Content: Noticeably higher than grade C-4
When To Step Up To C-22Higher chromium suits wet chlorine, hypochlorite and strongly oxidising bleach circuits.
When To Step Up To C-2000Copper bearing chemistry adds ground in sulphuric acid where C-4 runs marginal.
When C-4 Is Over-SpecifiedIf the line never sees heat and chlorides are mild, a 6Mo austenitic may do.
